PRIME LAMBS
The weekly sale of prime lambs saw a pleasing entry of 614 through the ring, with a few leaner sorts forward resulting in a slightly easier trade on the week, averaging 347p/kg.
Heavy lambs were still the order of the day with J Twigge, making his journey south well worth it selling Charollais lambs to £200. J Pinder & Sons, Newton saw his trailer load of quality Texels lambs achieve £196. Other heavy Texels sold to £183 from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale. Suffolks sold to £181 from R&D Kellet, Pilling with other pens of 50kg plus lambs around the £175 to £180 mark. Plenty of pens of continental bred lambs between 42kg-45kg were around the £156 to £160 mark.
C Ellison, Pilling would top the pence per kilo section this week with his pen of 44kg Texel lambs achieving 386p/kg. Other quality Texel lambs sold to 378p/kg from T&S Blades, Carnforth, with others from KA Purtill, Wigan to 374p/kg
A few more Mule and hill lambs are starting to come forward now with Brian Carter, Ellel achieving £151 for his pen of twenty Mules. Lighter sorts sold to £142 from T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale. Swaledale lambs from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead saw his lambs top at £109 weighing 38kg.
Eight buyers were around the ring today, all eager for lambs as Monday markets gain in popularity for both buyers and sellers.
CAST SHEEP
Cast sheep saw a few less about with 105 ewes and tups following the prime lambs. Trade would be every bit as good as previous weeks, if not a pound or two better, with a very good show of meated ewes on offer today. DJ Clarke, Garstang had a good day’s trading with his consignment of ewes topping at £252 for a cracking Texel ewe, with others from the same good home at £198 and Charollais to £193. Other Charollais sold to £184 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Mule ewes also from DJ Clarke, Garstang sold to £160, with others to £158 from P&AJ Whitaker & Son, Quernmore. Leaner sorts were around the £130 to £135 mark. Hill ewes sold to £134 for Cheviots from KA Purtill, Wigan with others to £127 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. A pen full of Herdwicks sold to £119 from M&S Purtill, West Horton. Just a handful of Swaledale this week saw leaner sorts top at £85 from DM Eames, Abbeystead.
STORE LAMBS
What a pity we didn’t have more, a lot more! As buyers were left going home with empty trailers, vowing to return next week if Andrew Butler can full his finger out and get some numbers in for next weeks sale! Texel lambs today topped the trade at £133 for long keep types and Mashams sold to £119 from DM Eames, Abbeystead.
